c.7.1 miles Saltaire (Salts Mill) to Shipley Glen walk

April 26, 2025 @ 9:30 am 1:30 pm

The walk will start from the free car park at Salts Mill at 9:30am. Please park near the entrance (the glazed entrance up some steps) to the mill or walk to there to meet up ready to walk. There are toilets in Salts Mill, which opens at 9:30am on Saturday, so we’ll wait for anyone who needs to use them.

As usual, we are going to eat in The Boathouse Pub. It overlooks the river, serves a good choice of food and is happy to accommodate us. They haven’t required a deposit in the past, but we do a pre-order. So please have a look at the menu and let me know what you would like for lunch. https://theboathouseinn.co.uk/

Here’s the menu: https://theboathouseinn.co.uk/our-food/    – 2 pages to look at.

We leave the car park and walk down to the canal and then along newly laid path at the start, all the way to Bingley Five Rise Locks. We then cross the canal and start a climb uphill on this path. We walk along ginnels between houses and some lovely old lanes. There are lots of woods on this walk too. On one occasion we saw a kingfisher on what must have been an old millpond. There are a few roads to cross and pavements by roads we have to walk up for short sections. One notable track descends by a field and had clearly had a stream running down it in wet weather. It had old cobbles set in it and could be quite slippery. Care will need to be taken on this section. You may find a pole useful on this. Personally, I’m not planning to take my poles.

We may encounter some muddy stretches on this walk, if we have any rain between now and then. I can’t recall any stiles on this walk. There was no livestock either.
