Saturday Walk: new walk from Galphay c. 7.3 miles easy to moderate category

The next walk is a new one for us. Joyce and I recc’d it a few months ago and I’ve finally got around to scheduling it. We’ll both have forgotten lots of it, but we’ve got it on the OS Map app so we won’t get lost!  We categorised this as an easy walk but closer to the moderate category. It has over 680ft of climbing in total but it’s not really bad. I’m allowing 3.25 to 3.5 hours for this walk. It’s a lovely, varied walk in an area that I’m not that familiar with.

We will be going to the Galphay Inn for lunch afterwards. The owner lives on site and has kindly agreed to open the loos for us before the walk. We need to do a pre-order for lunch – menus attached.

The walk will start at 9:30 am from free on street parking by the village green in Galphay. You can put Galphay Village Green into Google maps, or the Galphay Inn which is near to the Green HG4 3NJ

If you’d like to use the facilities at the pub before the walk starts, please arrive early enough to do that. They’ll be open from 9am.

We head across fields to start and then down a lane through Winkersley Banks and into Winkersley. We cross Winkersley Moor  and walk through Lower Grantley on a lane. More field and lane walking before we reach Lumley Moor reservoir, which we walk around most of before cutting off to go over Lumley Moor. This is the highest pint of the walk and the views are good. We then descend along lanes, field paths, and finally retrace our short initial route out of Galphay to return to the cars and remove our boots before eating at the pub.

Joyce and I encountered some mud and boggy bits when we walked the route in March, but we’d had a lot of rain earlier in the year, so I’m hoping the ground will all be pretty good underfoot. We encountered a broken stile in March.
