SUMMARY:Midweek walk: 5 miles from Follifoot to Spofforth and return along  Crimple Beck.
DESCRIPTION:This is an easy\, fairly flat walk through two lovely villages which have some interesting history\, before returning along Crimple Beck\, from where some unusual geological formations can be seen. The walk takes us on footpaths\, across fields and through Spofforth Golf Course\, then returns along the beck. There are inevitably a couple of stretches along roads but the rest of the walk makes up for them. There are few stiles\, however the beckside path is narrow and can be muddy and overgrown. Also please be aware that there could be long grass in some fields which can be very wet in the morning. We will stop for coffee at the Castle Inn in Spofforth which has outdoor as well as indoor space.

SUMMARY:Midweek walk: Burley in Wharfedale & Menston (c 6 miles)
DESCRIPTION:Our walk starts at the roundabout just outside Burley and takes us initially down the old Otley Road before we turn right and head across Otley Golf course and up to the old railway cutting. There are a couple of short uphill sections here which can be muddy\, and some steps to negotiate before we reach Ellar Ghyll and turn towards Menston\, negotiating a slightly tricky descent and some steps at this point. Having made our way through Menston we are soon in open countryside and the highlight of the walk on a fine day\, with delightful views down into the Wharfe Valley. On reaching Burley station we turn right into the village for a welcome cuppa at Cock Pit Farm tearooms before the final leg of our walk\, which takes us down to the River Wharfe and along a popular path beside the river to the roundabout on the bypass from where we head back to the cars. It could be muddy\, and remember that the vegetation can be very high at this time of year and the grass will be wet in the morning. Please also be aware that there are stiles\, open fields and short uphill and downhill sections on this walk\, and that the route crosses both a golf course and stables. Boots and poles are recommended.

SUMMARY:Midweek walk: circular route from Bramhope via Eccup and return through Golden Acre Park ( approx 4.5 miles )
DESCRIPTION:We start at the roundabout at the junction of A660 and King’s Road in Bramhope . We immediately set off across fields to Lineham Farm \, and from there to Brookland Farm . Continuing over fields we reach Bank House Farm at Eccup and follow Eccup Lane to Five Lane Ends . We then turn down King Lane to enter Golden Acre Park where we have our reward of a cuppa at the cafe . A short walk back up the A660 brings us back to our start point .  \n\n\n\nThe walk It is fairly flat \, with a couple of very short gentle inclines. We are walking mainly on fields \, and fairly quiet country lanes \, with main road at the end .There are several stiles and we are likely to encounter sheep and perhaps cattle but horses are unlikely . The ground may be muddy if there has been significant rain \, please wear stout shoes . Poles shouldn’t be needed . Please keep to the side when walking along roads .

SUMMARY:Saturday walk: 5th July: Ripon Circular along the canal - c 7 miles\, Easy
DESCRIPTION:The walk will start from the St Marygate car park in the centre of Ripon\, at 9:30am. Pay for over 4 hours and take cash\, as well as a card\, just in case. \n\n\n\nThere are public toilets at the top of the car park\, and we will all walk past them at the start of the walk. \n\n\n\nAfter the toilet stop\, we walk out by the side of the cathedral and on pavements down a couple of streets to reach the canal path. This is then a pleasant walk by the water\, past locks\, and a nature reserve. We cross the canal later on\, by a lock and after walking a little way down the other side of the canal we then leave that path to go through some fields. We walk through a poultry farm and now that the bird flu restrictions have been lifted (again)\, we may be walking amongst freely roaming hens. We come out near some barn conversions and walk up the diverted path to reach Bishop Monkton. This is a lovely little village\, but we don’t see much of it before we set off down a narrow path (which can be muddy if there has been rain) and into some more fields. We go through another poultry farm. I hope you all like chickens! \n\n\n\nWe come out on to a quiet tarmac road with a pavement and stay on that through the village of Littlethorpe before rejoining the canal and retracing our steps back to Ripon. \n\n\n\nI’ve booked for lunch at The Chimes Tea room in Ripon.   https://www.visitharrogate.co.uk/business-directory/chimes-cafe \n\n\n\nMark will be sending me the current menu when I advise him of the timings of the walk. I’ll send them out to those who sign up so we can do a pre-order for him. \n\n\n\nIf the walk takes under 3 hours\, we’ll go back to the cars and change out of our boots. \n\n\n\nAs usual\, we’ll encounter a variety of stiles and gates on this walk and livestock (mostly chickens) might be in the fields. If you have any concerns about slipping in any mud\, I advise bringing a pole. \n\n\n\nPlease wear appropriate clothing and footwear\, which take account of the weather forecast. I do my best to assess the weather and the likely walking conditions but would ask everyone to decide whether a particular walk is right for them on that day. Please note that everyone taking part in the walk does so at their own risk. \n\n\n\nHere’s the OS Map App link.  \n\n\n\nhttps://explore.osmaps.com/route/10097332/ripon-canal?lat=54.117249&lon=-1.537810&zoom=12.2821&style=Standard&type=2d

SUMMARY:Midweek walk: Nunroyd Park to Maggie's via Spring Wood (approx 4.5 miles)
DESCRIPTION:Starting from Nunroyd Park in Yeadon\, we will make our way through the park and then cross the A65 to follow Nunroyd Beck to the railway bridge and into Spring Wood. After exploring the woods we will head up into Little London and stop for coffee at Maggie’s before heading back across fields to Yeadon where we pick up the Aireborough Greenway\, an easy path which takes us all the way back before a short walk back up to Nunroyd Park.  \n\n\n\nWhilst this walk is largely on good paths\, if we were to get heavy rain in the next week some areas are very prone to flooding\, but the current forecast is promising.  Walking boots are essential and a pole might be helpful for the rougher paths. The walk has both downhill and uphill sections\, in particular as we climb up from the railway line towards Little London – please see the attached profile for more detail.

SUMMARY:Saturday Walk: 21st June - High Crag Ridge from Dacre Banks 6.75 miles - Harder category
DESCRIPTION:The walk will start from the small free car park opposite the Royal Oak Inn on Oak Lane in Dacre Banks at 9:30am. \n\n\n\nWe’ll go past the public toilet at the start of the walk. If it is working\, there’s only one actual toilet so it can delay the walk quite a lot if there’s 12 of us needing to use it. \n\n\n\nThe walk is all uphill – 944 feet of climbing until we reach the trig point\, about halfway round. There are field paths but also some good tracks for this section. There are fabulous views of Nidderdale\, including Menwith Hill. \n\n\n\nAfter the trip point it’s mostly downhill; on some good tracks and some grassy paths too. Towards the final section of the walk\, it’s fairly flat along a path not far from the Nidd (that we walk along in the opposite direction on another walk you may have done from Dacre Banks). We have to walk on a footpath by the roads up to The Firs Tearoom and back. \n\n\n\nThere’s a variety of stiles and gates on this walk and sheep\, cows and horses may be encountered. \n\n\n\nPlease wear appropriate clothing and footwear\, which take account of the weather forecast\, and bring a drink. Poles are very useful on the uphill and downhill sections as well as for stability when we encounter some mud\, but I’m not insisting on them at this time of the year. \n\n\n\nI do my best to assess the weather and the likely walking conditions but would ask everyone to decide whether a particular walk is right for them on that day. Please note that everyone taking part in the walk does so at their own risk \n\n\n\nOS MAP LINK for those of you who have the app and would like a copy to save. SUMMARY:Meanwood Park Walk
DESCRIPTION:The walk on Friday 13th June will be in and around Meanwood park. \n\n\n\n\n\n–We will meet at 10a.m. on Parkside Road\, just off the ring road. ( marked with the black circle on the map ) Unfortunately you can only turn into Parkside Road from that side of the ring road. This walk is relatively short\, only about a mile and a half in total with coffee at the cafe in the park in the middle\, but is mostly NOT on tarmac paths. It could therefore be a bit muddy in parts if we have a lot of rain between now and then\, so sensible footwear should be worn. \n\n\n\nScreenshot

SUMMARY:Saturday Walk 7th June - Sue Wittrick leading an easier category linear walk from Bramhope to Otley c 7 miles
DESCRIPTION:Sue has chosen a new walk for the WI and it’s a one way walk from Bramhope to Otley following the route of the Leeds Greenway route. It has 415 of ascent and 814 of descent\, which is why it is in the easier category. Please see the route and the walk profile in the attached pdf. \n\n\n\nThe walk will start from the tennis courts car park in Bramhope at 9:00am.  This is a free car park. \n\n\n\nWe start at the tennis courts in Bramhope and walk down to the A660 where we cross carefully. We walk past the Puritan Chapel and turn down Staircase Lane. We walk down the track until we reach the main road.  \n\n\n\nAfter walking on the pavement for a short distance we cross the main road and go up Avenue des Hirondelles. This is a beautiful avenue of trees which takes us steadily uphill until we reach the woods and  finally come out at Bar House Row.  \n\n\n\nWe cross a stile into the fields overlooking the Wharfe Valley. There are beautiful views across the valley as we walk gradually down the hill.  \n\n\n\nNear the old railway line we go along the valley a short way back towards Pool. Eventually we join a path next to the river and walk along by the river until we come to Gallow Hill Nature Reserve and Wharfe Meadows.  \n\n\n\nIt is in the easier category but there is a short section downhill which needs care as the stoney surface has worn badly and is very uneven\, so a pole is advisable.  There are several stiles and there are likely to be sheep\, alpacas and maybe horses. If we have rain before then there will be a few muddy stretches. \n\n\n\nPlease wear appropriate clothing and footwear\, which take account of the weather forecast\, and bring a drink and snack. \n\n\n\nSue will do her best to assess the weather and the likely walking conditions but would ask everyone to decide whether a particular walk is right for them on that day. Please note that everyone taking part in the walk does so at their own risk. \n\n\n\nAlso note: Depending on numbers and who is coming we may come back to Bramhope by bus\, or 1 or 2 of us may leave a car(s) in Otley before we start. I will decide nearer the time which is the better option.  \n\n\n\nKim has discovered a new cafe in Otley called Sancta which is happy to take a group of us. They don’t have a website\, so the menus aren’t readily online. \n\n\n\nhttps://www.instagram.com/sancta_books \n\n\n\nhttps://www.facebook.com/sancta.bookshop.cafe/?locale=en_GB \n\n\n\nOS MAP LINK for those of you who have the app and would like a copy of the walk. \n\n\n\nhttps://explore.osmaps.com/route/26888555/bramhope-to-otley?lat=53.90025&lon=-1.67836&zoom=12.9177&style=Leisure&type=2d

SUMMARY:Circular from Wetherby\, taking in Linto\, Sicklinghall and Stockeld Park
DESCRIPTION:The walk will start from the free riverside car park on Bridgefoot\, Wetherby LS22 6RF at 9:00am.  See attached map – it’s called the Wilderness car park on there. I think parking here may end up being charged for at some point too\, but it was still free a couple of weeks ago. Make sure you have a means of payment just in case it’s changed by 31st May. \n\n\n\nWe’ll leave the car park and cross over the bridge and walk past the sports centre and then by the river until the foot bridge.  We cross this and walk across Wetherby Golf Course and through Linton. We then go up a short steep hill to join Trip Lane which we follow until the start of the driveway to Wood Hall. We veer off to the right here and cut across fields to Sicklinghall. This is where we are likely to meet any mud for the first time on this walk – if there has been any significant rain by then. Once in Sicklinghall we walk along the pavements to reach Stockeld Lane and we take that to walk to and then through Stockeld Park. We must carefully cross the busy Wetherby – Harrogate Road and shortly after that we reach the disused railway line/cycleway which leads us into Wetherby. We’ll stop at Bel Sourire for refreshments before walking back to the carpark.  \n\n\n\nThere’s a variety of stiles and gates on this walk and sheep\, cows and horses may be encountered. \n\n\n\nPlease wear appropriate clothing and footwear\, which take account of the weather forecast\, and bring a drink. Poles are very useful on the uphill and downhill sections as well as for stability when we encounter some mud\, but I’m not insisting on them at this time of year. I will not have time to recce this walk beforehand\, so we need to be prepared for all conditions. \n\n\n\nI do my best to assess the weather and the likely walking conditions but would ask everyone to decide whether a particular walk is right for them on that day. Please note that everyone taking part in the walk does so at their own risk. \n\n\n\nPlease reply to this email if you would like to join this walk. \n\n\n\nOS MAP LINK for those of you who have the app and would like a copy of the walk. \n\n\n\nhttps://explore.osmaps.com/route/26834359/wetherby-to-linton-sicklinghall-and-stockeld-park?lat=53.93133&lon=-1.44193&zoom=12.654&style=Leisure&type=2d

SUMMARY:Midweek Walk - Caring for Life to Paul's Pond
DESCRIPTION:This is a nice straightforward walk for this time of year. Starting from Caring for Life we head along fields and Pinfold Lane towards Golden Acre Park and Paul’s Pond where we will head up through the woods and across the golf course to Cookridge Hall. Here we turn right and head back to Caring for Life\, where refreshments await. There are no significant hills on this walk and currently it is exceptionally dry\, but this could change if we have some rainfall so stout footwear is essential! \n\n\n\nMeet at 9:30a.m. ready to start walking in the car park at Caring for Life.

SUMMARY:Park walk- Temple Newsam
DESCRIPTION:I suggest we meet in the car park by the entrance to Go Ape at 10a.m.(unfortunately we will have to pay £1 for up to 2 hours or £2.50 for up to 4. You can pay by card\, but not cash.) \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOnce we have had coffee we can either walk back through the gardens or directly back to the car park. The paths are good\, but be aware that it isn’t all flat. \n\n\n\nCurrently the ladies attending are: Judy Knox\, Gill Cartwright\, June Pickles\, Diane Fryer and possibly Catherine Monaghan. \n\n\n\nPlease also be aware that the road through Crossgates past the station is currently shut\, so it is probably best to approach via the new road to The Springs
