Alison has very kindly agreed to arrange and give us an exclusive guided tour of the priory.Bolton Priory is one of the finest medieval churches in the north of England.  Since its foundation in the twelfth century\, it has been a site of continuous Christian worship\, surviving Scottish raids\, the Black Death\, the Dissolution of the Monasteries and the religious turbulence of later centuries. Throughout the centuries\, men and women have been baptised\, have married\, have worshipped and have been buried within these precincts. DESCRIPTION:Starting from the Millman Swing Bridge on Apperley Road\, we head along the canal towpath towards Shipley passing two sets of locks\, before descending Buck Mill Lane to cross the river and make our way along the road into Esholt village. From here we take the road behind the village which becomes a path through woods\, before briefly joining the road through the water treatment plant. A track then leads down to the delightful Esholt Suspension Bridge and from here we make our way though fields back to our starting point. It is a short walk from Millman Bridge to Apperley Bridge Marina café for coffee. after our walk.

SUMMARY:Saturday Walk -23th May 8.6 miles. Harder Category from Pateley Bridge to Brimham Rocks and back via the Nidd
DESCRIPTION:The walk will start from the long stay car park on Nidd Walk – next to Wildings Cafe at 9:00am. It costs £2.20 for over 4 hours. I’ve attached a map to the email that went out show the location of the car park. You can pay by cash\, card or by phone. There were some issues one time I was there\, so don’t rely on just one of these methods. There are toilets in the car park over the road near the start of the walk\, but I’d appreciate it if you could use them before we set off at 9:00. \n\n\n\nI’m hoping we will be eating at Wildings café\, next to where we are leaving the cars.  I’ve messaged to book for 1:15pm but not had a response as yet. I’ve seen a post on Instagram which suggests the owner is having a little break this week and they’ll be open again on the 20/5. So that should mean they’ll be OK with my booking. However\, I’ve no idea if they’ll want a pre-order or not and the café no longer has a website; they’re just on social media these days. Anyway\, fingers crossed it will all work out OK. Worst case scenario is that we will have to take a packed lunch and find somewhere to sit. \n\n\n\nWe leave the car park and head up the main street which bends round to the right at the top. We keep going along the street a bit further until we see the footpath sign on our left. The climbing continues up the steps and then on a well-defined path. We meet small lanes and wiggle up little paths between houses. We join the Nidderdale Way at times. You may recognise some of the paths on this walk from a previous Brimham Rocks walk and also another walk I do from Dacre Banks. There’s the odd bit of crossing little becks\, so you might find a pole useful. We eventually reach Brimham Rocks and the food stall there\, plus there are toilets here. We will stop for a short break (10 minutes max) where you can drink your own drinks\, eat your own snack and use the facilities. \n\n\n\nThe descent starts after this\, and we pick up paths some of you will know. We pass through Smelthouses on our way down to the Nidd and then walk back to Pateley by the river\, through Glasshouses.   \n\n\n\nWe may encounter some muddy stretches on this walk\, if we have any rain between now and then. There’s a variety of stiles and we may encounter livestock in the fields. \n\n\n\nPlease wear appropriate clothing and footwear\, which take account of the weather forecast\, and bring a drink and a snack. I do my best to assess the weather and the likely walking conditions but would ask everyone to decide whether a particular walk is right for them on that day. Please note that everyone taking part in the walk does so at their own risk.

SUMMARY:Midweek Walk: Approx 4.5 miles circular route from Linton to Collingham and Wetherby
DESCRIPTION:Starting at the car park just before the bridge in Linton\, we make our way along a pretty beck into Collingham village and enter the churchyard where we pick up the riverside path heading towards Wetherby. This delightful path meanders alongside the River Wharfe\, before we cross the river and return via a recreational area and part of Wetherby golf course then rejoin the road to walk back into Linton. We have a chance to admire some stunning houses before turning left onto quiet paths which bring us out just across the bridge from the car park. This is a fairly flat walk with just a couple of stiles and occasional steps to assist the few gentle uphill sections. We will probably call at Muddy Boots for coffee after the walk. Walking boots and poles are recommended.

SUMMARY:Saturday Walk: 13th June - 8 miles\, medium to harder category: Ilkley to Addingham circular
DESCRIPTION:The next walk is in the “medium/harder” category primarily because of the short steep section at the start of the walk and the length of the walk. There’s also the climb back up to the car park from the river in Ilkley at the end of the walk – which I usually forget to mention. I estimate that this walk could take up to 3.5 hours. We’ll be having lunch at the Vitello Lounge\, which is part way up the hill back towards the car park. They have a large menu to suit everyone and lots of space for groups. \n\n\n\nThe walk will start from the car park near the Darwin gardens at 9:15am. (see map attached) To find this car park you go up Wells Road and over the cattlegrid just before the moors and the entrance to the car park is on the right\, immediately after you go over the cattlegrid . After searching online\, I can’t find any information about charges for this car park but do come prepared\, just in case. There are no toilets though\, so you might have to visit the car park in the centre of Ilkley for those before the walk\, if needed. \n\n\n\nNote that the Ilkley Food and drink Festival is on this weekend but it’s on East Holmes field – over past the lido area so it won’t affect us. \n\n\n\nThe walk heads up on to the moors and there’s a steep section walking up a lane to start with. Once we get on the path it’s much more level. If the weather is good\, we’ll have some great views over Wharfedale. We head along for a while and then there’s a small stream to cross on stones and then another very short steep section on the moors up to a slightly higher-level path near the Swastika stone. From there we enjoy the views for a while longer before we descend a slightly rocky path\, where we have to take care as it can be a bit tricky (sure footedness and a pole essential)\, we then go through a field of sheep on to a lane. We continue along the lane before reaching Addingham Moorside where we descend again. Then we must very carefully cross the busy A65 and descend into Addingham. There is a toilet in Addingham (slightly off the walk route)\, which could be used if needed\, however it is no longer free and I am unable to find out the charges and how you pay\, so bring cash and a card\, if you think you might need to use it. \n\n\n\nWe then follow the Dales Way by the river back to Ilkley. This part is all flat. Once we reach Ilkley\, we have to climb back up to the car park\, but we’ll break that section of the walk with a refreshment stop at the Vitello Lounge on Station Plaza\, booked for 12:45 – we might be early.

DESCRIPTION:Starting from Nunroyd Park in Yeadon\, we cross the A65 and make our way through the New Scarborough estate and across the railway line to descend into the hidden delights of Spring Wood. After exploring the woods we will head up Gill Lane and through Ghyll Fold Farm then across the fields to Maggie’s in Little London. After coffee we make our way back across the fields and up into Yeadon where we pick up the Aireborough Greenway\, an easy path which takes us all the way back to retrace our steps to Nunroyd Park.

DESCRIPTION:Beginning at Apperley Bridge\, the walk teeters along the edges of the River Aire then through the housing estate at Horsforth Vale before returning on a charming section of towpath down the Leeds – Liverpool canal. The walk is relatively flat and takes in some beautiful\, tranquil countryside. Although it should be dry underfoot the riverside path is quite narrow in places so there could be some overgrown sections\, but I doubt any will be a problem. We will stop for a break in the middle of the walk and if we are fortunate enough to have a dry day the Tiny Tea Room at Rodley will be an option or there is also Brodie and Flynn if an indoor venue is required.

SUMMARY:Saturday Walk: north of the river from Otley - c 7.3 miles\, medium category
DESCRIPTION:The walk will start from the free parking near the Buon Apps restaurant at 9:15am. \n\n\n\nWe will walk along the Six Dales Trail out of Otley and up the north side of the Wharfe Valley. It’s worth looking back at the great views\, if it’s clear. We only go as far as Clifton on this walk (which is why it’s medium and not hard as we don’t go into the Washburn Valley where we’d have to climb up again to get out of there).  We then descend the hill and come back into Otley through the estate and down to the river. We’ll cross over the footbridge and have a little circuit around the Gallows Hill nature reserve before coming back past the cars (where we can change out of our boots).  It’s then a short walk into town to Bay Tree Court for the cafe.

The Spirit of Endeavour has inside seating\, but we are hoping it will once again be possible to sit in the sunshine on the front deck.  \n\n\n\nThe cost of the boattrip is £19.60pp. Spirit of Endeavour (Yorkshire) is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation established in January 2022 and is a “not-for-profit” organisation run entirely by Volunteers. Numbers are strictly limited to 12 on each trip.

SUMMARY:Saturday Walk - easier walk 6.5 miles from Dacre Banks
DESCRIPTION:The walk will start from the car park in Dacre Banks opposite the Royal Oak pub on Oak Lane (behind the Dacre and Hartwith Village Hall) at 9:30am. See attached map. This is a free car park\, but it’s not very large so we should aim to take as few cars as possible. There is a free public toilet close to the start of this walk but we can’t always rely on it being open. I’ll try to find the local parish council minutes as they sometimes talk about any issues with that loo. \n\n\n\nThe walk goes along a nice wide path along the bottom of the Nidd Valley all the way to Glasshouses. We then come back much closer to the river\, on narrower paths\, on the return leg for a while before leaving the Nidd and gently climbing towards Smelthouses. There is a short steep section on the road before we pass through a farm and some barn conversions and then through fields and some woods. We descend into Summerbridge\, where we will stop for refreshments at the Firs Tea Room. It’s then a relatively short walk downhill back into Dacre Banks and the car park. \n\n\n\nPlease wear appropriate clothing and footwear\, which take account of the weather forecast\, and bring a drink. I do my best to assess the weather and the likely walking conditions but would ask everyone to decide whether a particular walk is right for them on that day. Please note that everyone taking part in the walk does so at their own risk.
