SUMMARY:Approx 4 miles along the riverbank from Low Mill to Addingham and an exploration of the village
DESCRIPTION:Starting from the old Ilkley Road our route takes us along part of the Dalesway through the delightful hamlet of Low Mill in Addingham to St Peter’s Church\, from where we head up into the village itself and explore some of the back lanes and footpaths\, passing some delightful old cottages and converted mills. Eventually our route takes us back to the river where we will stop for refreshment at Hamilton’s before returning along the riverbank and retracing our steps through Low Mill to the cars. The walk is mostly on good paths and lanes\, with a few short unavoidable sections along the main road. There are no hills and the majority of the walk is flat\, but some paths undulate\, especially on the return riverside section\, and there are three sets of steps and one field with sheep. Depending on the rainfall in the next 10 days some paths could be muddy\, so walking boots and poles will be needed.

SUMMARY:4 mile circular walk from the outskirts of Guiseley to Menston.
DESCRIPTION:Our walk takes us from Guiseley Drive (first left on the A65 after the White Cross roundabout if coming from Guiseley) behind the new High Royds estate before turning up towards High Royds Hall and crossing fields to bring us into the centre of Menston. From here we walk down towards the station on quiet roads then cross the A65 to swing back round over the railway and through fields before emerging on Netherfield Road. A combination of roads and paths brings us back to the White Cross roundabout where Twenty8Coffee offers refreshments. This is a pleasant ramble on footpaths\, across fields and some road walking with great views on a clear day. There is 317 ft of ascent and descent\, there are some stiles and as we cross farm land there is always the possibility of encountering livestock as well as probably quite a lot of mud and fields with long grass which can be very wet in the morning or after rain\, therefore please ensure you have boots and poles. Twenty8Coffee are reluctant to take bookings so we may have to take a chance there.

SUMMARY:Saturday Walk 25th October - easier category - 7 miles from Horsforth
DESCRIPTION:The next walk is a nice relatively easy walk starting from the free Fink Hill car park in Horsforth. There is a short hill fairly near the start of the walk (Hunger Hills area) and a gradual climb back up to Horsforth from the River Aire during the final third of the walk. In total there is over 900 feet of ascent\, but it doesn’t make this a hard walk. I estimate that it will take us a maximum of 3 hours. We will have lunch at the Greenhouse on Horsforth Town Street at 12:15. This is an excellent vegan café which we’ve used before. They’ve introduced a restriction on numbers for the first time – 10 max\, so I could take 12 on the walk but only 10 for the lunch. I’m sorry about this\, but they say they get too busy on a Saturday lunchtime to accommodate and more. Note that there is no cow’s milk served in hot drinks. They like the idea of pre-orders for the food\, so please have a look at the menu and let me know what you would like to eat. I love the food here and I’m not a vegan. We’ll change out of our boots at the cars and then walk up Town Street. \n\n\n\nhttps://www.thegreenhousehorsforth.co.uk/menu \n\n\n\nThe walk will start from the Fink Hill car park in Horsforth at 9:15am.  This was a free car park next to Hall Park but we may well have to pay\, so bring a card/cash etc.  See attached map. \n\n\n\nThere are no toilets at the start of this walk. \n\n\n\nA lovely\, varied walk around parts of Horsforth that takes in Hunger Hills\, the canal at Rodley and Cragg Hill. \n\n\n\nWe will walk from the car park up to Hunger Hills\, where there are great views\, then drop down to the canal at Rodley. From there we walk by the canal to Newlay where we cross the river and walk alongside it for a while. We come up and away from the river to cross the A65\, up onto Outwood Lane and back via Cragg Hill and Featherbank. \n\n\n\nMuch of this walk is on decent paths but there are a couple of stretches where we walk through woods and by the edge of a field. \n\n\n\nWe may encounter some muddy stretches on this walk\, especially if we have any rain between now and then. There aren’t really any areas where we’re likely to encounter livestock and stiles are few and far between on this walk. \n\n\n\nPlease wear appropriate clothing and footwear\, which take account of the weather forecast\, and bring a drink. I do my best to assess the weather and the likely walking conditions but would ask everyone to decide whether a particular walk is right for them on that day. Please note that everyone taking part in the walk does so at their own risk. \n\n\n\nHere’s the link for those of you who have the OS Map App. It should appear in the tab labelled “Bookmarked” when you download it.  \n\n\n\nhttps://explore.osmaps.com/route/6976961/jennys-horsforth-walk?lat=53.833870&lon=-1.663416&zoom=12.9097&style=Standard&type=2d

SUMMARY:4.5 mile walk along the River Aire and Leeds-Liverpool Canal from Apperley Bridge.
DESCRIPTION:Beginning at Apperley Bridge\, the walk teeters along the edges of the River Aire to reach the new housing estate at Horsforth Vale before returning on a charming section of towpath along the Leeds – Liverpool canal. The walk is relatively flat and takes in some beautiful\, tranquil countryside. The riverside path is quite narrow in places so there could be some overgrown sections and depending on rainfall in the preceding days it could be muddy\, so appropriate footwear and poles are advised. We will aim to stop in the middle of the walk for coffee at Brodie and Flynn in Horsforth Vale\, however they do not take bookings so they may be full. They do have outdoor seating\, but we will have to see on the day.

SUMMARY:Midweek walk: 4.5 miles circular route from Linton to Collingham and Wetherby.
DESCRIPTION:Starting at the car park just before the bridge in Linton\, we make our way along a pretty beck into Collingham village and enter the churchyard where we pick up the riverside path heading towards Wetherby. This delightful path meanders alongside the River Wharfe\, before we join the road bridge to cross the river and enter Wetherby. I am hoping we can stop for coffee at Bel Sourire\, which some of our members have recommended\, before returning via a recreational area and part of Wetherby golf course and rejoining the road to walk back into Linton. We have a chance to admire some stunning houses before turning left onto quiet paths which bring us out just across the bridge from the car park. This is a fairly flat walk with just a couple of stiles and occasional steps to assist the few gentle uphill sections. Walking boots and poles are recommended. Please be aware that this walk is notoriously muddy and due to the proximity of the footpath to the river if there is significant rainfall in the preceding days I will change the route.

SUMMARY:Saturday Walk: 27th September - Harder Walk - Burley in Wharfedale to Hawksworth Moor and Menston c 7.25mls
DESCRIPTION:The next walk is in the “harder” category as it goes up on to the moors from Burley in Wharfedale. I estimate that this walk will take around 3.5 hours. I last led this walk in July 2023. \n\n\n\nWe’ll be having lunch at the Cock Pit Farm Tearooms in Burley in Wharfedale. If you sign up for this walk\, could you have a look at the attached menu and let me know your choice. I’ve attached it as a pdf. \n\n\n\nThe walk will start from the station at Burley in Wharfedale at 9:15am. \n\n\n\nThere is free on-street parking near the station but just watch out for any restriction notices. I believe these generally apply during the week. Please don’t use the actual station car park as I think we should leave this for train users. You could try the road leading up to the station (a dead-end but with plenty of room to turn around)\, the Robins\, Prospect Road or the main street: Station Road. \n\n\n\nThe walk goes along Hag Farm Road but turns off to the right before some of our other walks do. We soon end up climbing all the way to the top of the moor\, by various routes. We end up near Reva Reservoir. There are great views at lots of points on this walk. \n\n\n\nAfter this we head along a fairly level path before descending down to the High Royds development at Menston. We wiggle around parts of Menston and then back into Burley. This is all downhill. \n\n\n\nIf we’ve had some rain by the time of this walk there can be some muddy stretches. As usual\, we’ll encounter a variety of stiles and gates on this walk and livestock will be in the fields. I would expect cattle and sheep on the open moor and possibly horses in fields on this walk. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear\, which take account of the weather forecast\, and bring a drink. Poles might be an idea in view of the mud risk and it may well rain a bit before this walk. As you all know poles are very useful on the uphill and downhill sections as well as for stability if we do encounter some mud. I will not have time to recce this walk again before the 27th\, so we need to be prepared for all conditions. I think I’ll insist on a pole from the start of October.I do my best to assess the weather and the likely walking conditions but would ask everyone to decide whether a particular walk is right for them on that day. Please note that everyone taking part in the walk does so at their own risk.OS MAP LINK – works for everyone but shows all the features if you have the app.https://explore.osmaps.com/route/10098109/burley-in-wharfedale-to-hawksworth-moor–menston?lat=53.89405&lon=-1.78324&zoom=12.6583&style=Leisure&type=2d

SUMMARY:Midweek walk: 4.2 miles from Knott Lane to Micklefield Park and Maggie's.
DESCRIPTION:Starting from Knott Lane (a right turn off the A65 before Rawdon Cemetery if you are travelling from Rawdon crossroads) we will make our way along quiet lanes\, through fields and woodland paths to Rawdon Golf Club. A number of paths crisscross the golf course and take us through to Micklefield Lane and the adjacent park. Here we will stop for coffee at Maggie’s before making our way back through the park and golf course to Woodlands Drive and a leisurely stroll back to the cars\, passing some once grand buildings. Please be aware that this area of Rawdon is quite hilly\, so there are some undulating sections and the last stretch back to Knott Lane climbs gently up a rough path! As well as crossing open fields\, some of the paths are uneven and stony\, so poles and walking boots are recommended. We do cross fields of livestock\, mainly sheep\, but last time there were cattle and there could be horses. There are lots of gates and just one stile. See attached map for route and elevation profile.

SUMMARY:Midweek walk: 3.5 miles Otley: Wharfe Meadows Park and Gallows Hill Nature Reserve.
DESCRIPTION:Starting from the car park opposite Buon Apps\, our walk takes us initially on good paths over the bridge and through Wharfe Meadows Park before crossing the river to the Gallows Hill Nature Reserve. From here we make our way up to East Busk Lane from where we return to Otley through fields and ginnels. This is a pleasant\, fairly flat circuit through some lesser known areas of Otley on mostly good paths\, although we do cross some fields. We will call at a café in Otley for refreshments at the end of our walk.

SUMMARY:Saturday Walk: 30th August - medium category - c 7.3 miles\, circular walk from the Mistal cafe on the Chevin
DESCRIPTION:I’m choosing another walk close to home for the next one. It was mentioned how much people liked the food at the Mistal (previously the Cheerful Chilli) so we’ll go there for lunch after this walk on the Chevin. Last time we used them they let us start the walk from there and we used their parking. They’re not open until later in the week\, so I’ll double check and confirm back to you all. It’s one I’ve made up to be the right length. This walk has a bit of up and down in it but it’s mostly gradual and we’re not going up the Chevin steps. The total ascending is just over 1000 feet. I estimate that this walk will take around 3 hours. \n\n\n\nI have emailed my previous contact but not had a response as yet. Previously they wanted a pre-order\, so please have a look at the menu link and let me know what food you would like\, if you sign up for this walk. \n\n\n\n\nBREAKFAST\, BRUNCH & LUNCH MENU\n\n\n\n\nThe walk will start from the Mistal café car park on the left-hand side as you descend the Chevin on East Chevin Road at 9:00am.  \n\n\n\nWe’ll turn left out of the Mistal car park and walk down and through the public car park on the other side of the road to pick up the little path by the side of the road. We’ll come out on the East Chevin Road and carefully cross it to head up the path at the side of the house. This takes us up to Surprise View. We’ll continue past there and into the woods where eventually we emerge into a field where we can see the York Gate Road. We cross York Gate and pick up another path which heads down towards an old quarry\, we’ll turn left along another good path and come out past Upcroft Farm. We’ll head down Carlton Lane a little way and then pick up another path which will bring us out in West Carlton. We cross Carlton Lane again and take Mall Lane up towards the Chevin Lodge Hotel. We’ll wander through their grounds (York Gate Plantation) and come out on York Gate again. We cut across a couple of fields and descend to East Chevin Road\, which we’ll cross and walk down along the pavement until we pick up a path into the Chevin Forest park. We’ll do a decent loop in here before emerging back at The Mistal in time for lunch. \n\n\n\nIf there has been some rain before this walk there will be some muddy stretches. We will encounter a variety of stiles and livestock will be in the fields. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear\, which take account of the weather forecast\, and bring a drink. Poles are still optional but as you all know\, they are useful on the uphill and downhill sections of this walk as well as for stability if we encounter any mud. I do my best to assess the weather and the likely walking conditions but would ask everyone to decide whether a particular walk is right for them on that day. Please note that everyone taking part in the walk does so at their own risk. \n\n\n\nOS Map link\, which you can view even if you do not have the app. You should be able to see the route and the walk profile \n\n\n\nhttps://explore.osmaps.com/route/28323111/wi-route-from-the-mistal-on-otley-chevin

SUMMARY:Midweek Walk: The Walk of many Stiles (Beckwithshaw Circular): 4 miles.
DESCRIPTION:This is a relatively easy walk starting from the car park next to the church in Beckwithshaw (look out for a right turn opposite the Smiths Arms). We make our way through field paths\, back lanes and tracks\, passing some impressive houses\, to the hamlet of Beckwith before we pick up a section of the Harrogate Ringway then swing back round to return to the village. In the past some sections of this walk have had long grass which can be wet in the morning or after rain\, and nettles which are currently very tall\, so please dress appropriately\, and there will probably be livestock (both horses and cattle) in the fields. But above all\, there are lots of stiles (25 on one count\, although I think a few may have been replaced by gates!). Horticap\, just round the corner has a delightful café for refreshments after the walk or if it is a warm day The Smith’s Arms opposite the church has cold drinks and outdoor seating.

SUMMARY:Saturday Walk:16th August – Harder walk - North of the river from Otley - c 8.3 miles
DESCRIPTION:The next walk is in the “harder” category with around 1000 ft of ascending and descending\, but we are staying nice and local this time. I think it will take us 3.5 to 4 hours. I last listed this walk in September last year. \n\n\n\nI’m going to have us try out the Whittakers pub for lunch afterwards. It’s the one that bought out The Little Corner of the World café. They have outdoor seating if the weather is OK (no TV’s outside). I think we’ll go and take our boots off at the cars before going to the pub for lunch so I’ve reserved tables from 1:15pm. Please let me have your choice from the menu so I can do a pre-order for them. \n\n\n\nhttps://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61557197648435&locale=en_GB \n\n\n\nThe walk will start from the free parking near the Buon Apps restaurant at 9:00am. \n\n\n\nWe will walk along the Six Dales Trail out of Otley and up the north side of the Wharfe Valley. It’s worth looking back at the great views\, if it’s clear. We go over into the Washburn Valley\, where the views are lovely again and then we climb up and back over into the Wharfe Valley. Altogether there’s just over 1\,000 ft of climbing. \n\n\n\nThere are plenty of stiles on this walk and whilst some paths and the road walking will be OK\, whatever the weather\, the numerous fields could be muddy. We will definitely meet livestock and the various fields\, usually sheep and cattle. \n\n\n\nAs this is quite a long walk\, you might wish to bring a flask and a snack\, and we’ll stop for that on the way round somewhere. We might have to have it standing up! \n\n\n\nPlease wear appropriate clothing and footwear\, which take account of the weather forecast. A pole would be a good idea because of the two hills and the possibility of mud. I do my best to assess the weather and the likely walking conditions but would ask everyone to decide whether a particular walk is right for them on that day. Please note that everyone taking part in the walk does so at their own risk. \n\n\n\nOS Map App link \n\n\n\nhttps://explore.osmaps.com/route/15777609/otley-to-clifton-with-extension-to-rose-tree-farm

SUMMARY:Midweek walk: 5 miles from Follifoot to Spofforth and return along  Crimple Beck.
DESCRIPTION:This is an easy\, fairly flat walk through two lovely villages which have some interesting history\, before returning along Crimple Beck\, from where some unusual geological formations can be seen. The walk takes us on footpaths\, across fields and through Spofforth Golf Course\, then returns along the beck. There are inevitably a couple of stretches along roads but the rest of the walk makes up for them. There are few stiles\, however the beckside path is narrow and can be muddy and overgrown. Also please be aware that there could be long grass in some fields which can be very wet in the morning. We will stop for coffee at the Castle Inn in Spofforth which has outdoor as well as indoor space.

SUMMARY:Midweek walk: Burley in Wharfedale & Menston (c 6 miles)
DESCRIPTION:Our walk starts at the roundabout just outside Burley and takes us initially down the old Otley Road before we turn right and head across Otley Golf course and up to the old railway cutting. There are a couple of short uphill sections here which can be muddy\, and some steps to negotiate before we reach Ellar Ghyll and turn towards Menston\, negotiating a slightly tricky descent and some steps at this point. Having made our way through Menston we are soon in open countryside and the highlight of the walk on a fine day\, with delightful views down into the Wharfe Valley. On reaching Burley station we turn right into the village for a welcome cuppa at Cock Pit Farm tearooms before the final leg of our walk\, which takes us down to the River Wharfe and along a popular path beside the river to the roundabout on the bypass from where we head back to the cars. It could be muddy\, and remember that the vegetation can be very high at this time of year and the grass will be wet in the morning. Please also be aware that there are stiles\, open fields and short uphill and downhill sections on this walk\, and that the route crosses both a golf course and stables. Boots and poles are recommended.
