SUMMARY:Saturday Walk: north of the river from Otley - c 7.3 miles\, medium category
DESCRIPTION:The walk will start from the free parking near the Buon Apps restaurant at 9:15am. \n\n\n\nWe will walk along the Six Dales Trail out of Otley and up the north side of the Wharfe Valley. It’s worth looking back at the great views\, if it’s clear. We only go as far as Clifton on this walk (which is why it’s medium and not hard as we don’t go into the Washburn Valley where we’d have to climb up again to get out of there).  We then descend the hill and come back into Otley through the estate and down to the river. We’ll cross over the footbridge and have a little circuit around the Gallows Hill nature reserve before coming back past the cars (where we can change out of our boots).  It’s then a short walk into town to Bay Tree Court for the cafe.

DESCRIPTION:We propose to do the same as in 2024 and provide our own lunch (we will ask everyone to bring 1 item). This will enable us to sail through Skipton and out towards Gargrave\, enjoying some stunning scenery and our lunch on the way. Free tea and coffee are available all day on board.  \n\n\n\nWe will board the Spirit of Endeavour (Yorkshire) just outside Skipton at 10.30 and enjoy tea/coffee and cake as we chug gently along\, returning to the car park for around 3 – 3.30. The Spirit of Endeavour has inside seating\, but we are hoping it will once again be possible to sit in the sunshine on the front deck.  \n\n\n\nThe cost of the boattrip is £19.60pp. Spirit of Endeavour (Yorkshire) is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation established in January 2022 and is a “not-for-profit” organisation run entirely by Volunteers. Numbers are strictly limited to 12 on each trip.

SUMMARY:Saturday Walk - easier walk 6.5 miles from Dacre Banks
DESCRIPTION:The walk will start from the car park in Dacre Banks opposite the Royal Oak pub on Oak Lane (behind the Dacre and Hartwith Village Hall) at 9:30am. See attached map. This is a free car park\, but it’s not very large so we should aim to take as few cars as possible. There is a free public toilet close to the start of this walk but we can’t always rely on it being open. I’ll try to find the local parish council minutes as they sometimes talk about any issues with that loo. \n\n\n\nThe walk goes along a nice wide path along the bottom of the Nidd Valley all the way to Glasshouses. We then come back much closer to the river\, on narrower paths\, on the return leg for a while before leaving the Nidd and gently climbing towards Smelthouses. There is a short steep section on the road before we pass through a farm and some barn conversions and then through fields and some woods. We descend into Summerbridge\, where we will stop for refreshments at the Firs Tea Room. It’s then a relatively short walk downhill back into Dacre Banks and the car park. Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear\, which take account of the weather forecast\, and bring a drink. I do my best to assess the weather and the likely walking conditions but would ask everyone to decide whether a particular walk is right for them on that day.

SUMMARY:Saturday Walk - Medium to hard   c 7.3 miles. Goit Stock Waterfalls and Hewenden Viaduct from Woodbank Nurseries\, Harden
DESCRIPTION:The walk will start from the car park at Woodbank Nurseries\, Harden Road\, Bingley\, BD16 1BE at 9:30am \n\n\n\nAs it’s a large car park\, I suggest we all park on the right-hand side as you drive into the car park – up against the fence boundary. This is a free car park. We can use the toilets in the garden centre before the walk\, but please make sure you arrive early enough to do this. It opens at 9am. \n\n\n\nThe walk starts along a few roads\, with pavements\, before we join a quieter lane which passes houses and joins Harden Beck. We enter Goit Stock Wood and waterfalls of differing sizes. It’s a lovely route – trees and water\, fabulous in my book. We pass a mill complex; now apartments and walk along their access road before more trees and a stretch above a steep wooded bank. We get our first view of the Hewenden viaduct around now. We cross the B6144 and then approach the viaduct and eventually pass under the arches. There’s a short steep section as we have to reach the path which goes over the viaduct. There are great views over Hewenden reservoir at this point too. \n\n\n\nThe path over the viaduct is called the Great Northern Trail and is the route of an old railway line. If you’re tall enough (I’m not!)  you will be able to look over the walls to see the view! After crossing the viaduct\, we walk down a lane and enter more woodland. We walk on lanes\, pavements and through fields before entering the St Ives Estate where we walk by a pond and then descend through more woods and join a lane back to Harden Road\, which we cross to arrive back at Woodbank Nurseries. \n\n\n\nThe Potting Shed café\, in the garden centre\, doesn’t need us to do a pre-order\, so you can just choose what you fancy to eat on the day..There can be some very muddy sections near stiles and previously it has been very muddy through the woods near the waterfalls. There is a variety of stiles on this walk and there may be livestock in the fields. There have been horses previously. \n\n\n\nPlease wear appropriate clothing and footwear\, which take account of the weather forecast\, and bring a drink. Poles might be an idea in view of the mud risk and it may well rain a bit before this walk. As you all know poles are very useful on the uphill and downhill sections as well as for stability if we do encounter some mud. I do my best to assess the weather and the likely walking conditions but would ask everyone to decide whether a particular walk is right for them on that day. Please note that everyone taking part in the walk does so at their own risk.

SUMMARY:Saturday Walk: new walk from Galphay c. 7.3 miles easy to moderate category
DESCRIPTION:The next walk is a new one for us. Joyce and I recc’d it a few months ago and I’ve finally got around to scheduling it. We’ll both have forgotten lots of it\, but we’ve got it on the OS Map app so we won’t get lost!  We categorised this as an easy walk but closer to the moderate category. It has over 680ft of climbing in total but it’s not really bad. I’m allowing 3.25 to 3.5 hours for this walk. It’s a lovely\, varied walk in an area that I’m not that familiar with. \n\n\n\nWe will be going to the Galphay Inn for lunch afterwards. The owner lives on site and has kindly agreed to open the loos for us before the walk. We need to do a pre-order for lunch – menus attached.The walk will start at 9:30 am from free on street parking by the village green in Galphay. You can put Galphay Village Green into Google maps\, or the Galphay Inn which is near to the Green HG4 3NJ \n\n\n\nIf you’d like to use the facilities at the pub before the walk starts\, please arrive early enough to do that. They’ll be open from 9am. \n\n\n\nWe head across fields to start and then down a lane through Winkersley Banks and into Winkersley. We cross Winkersley Moor  and walk through Lower Grantley on a lane. More field and lane walking before we reach Lumley Moor reservoir\, which we walk around most of before cutting off to go over Lumley Moor. This is the highest pint of the walk and the views are good. We then descend along lanes\, field paths\, and finally retrace our short initial route out of Galphay to return to the cars and remove our boots before eating at the pub. \n\n\n\nPlease let me have your menu choice from the email attachments when you sign up for the walk. \n\n\n\nJoyce and I encountered some mud and boggy bits when we walked the route in March\, but we’d had a lot of rain earlier in the year\, so I’m hoping the ground will all be pretty good underfoot. We encountered a broken stile in March.

SUMMARY:Saturday Walk - hard category - c 7 miles\, circular walk from the Mistal cafe on the Chevin
DESCRIPTION:The next walk is in the harder category but is very local on the Chevin. Welast did it in January this year. Everyone seems to enjoy the lunches at theMistal and we like the upstairs private room they give us. This walk hasquite a bit of up and down in it but it’s mostly gradual and we’re not goingup the Chevin steps. The total ascending is over 900 feet. I estimate thatthis walk will take around 3 hours.Hopefully\, we’ll start from the Mistal café car park on the left-hand sideas you descend the Chevin on East Chevin Road at 9:00am.  The Mistal cafémanager is going to check with the wedding coordinator on Wednesday aboutthe time of the wedding that day. NOTE: we may end up starting this walkfrom the car park at Surprise view \, or maybe the lower car park on theChevin. I’m thinking I might go check out the parking next Saturday morningwhen the park run is on and confirm to those of you who sign up where thestart will be.The route described below will be the same\, we’ll just might start the walkon a different part of the walk.We’ll turn left out of the Mistal car park and walk down and through thepublic car park on the other side of the road to pick up the little path bythe side of the road. We’ll come out on the East Chevin Road and carefullycross it to head up the path at the side of the house. This takes us up toSurprise View. We’ll continue past there and into the woods where eventuallywe emerge into a field where we can see the York Gate Road. We cross YorkGate and pick up another path which heads down towards an old quarry\, we’llturn left along another good path and come out past Upcroft Farm. We’ll headdown Carlton Lane a little way and then pick up another path which willbring us out in West Carlton. We cross Carlton Lane again and take Mall Laneup towards the Chevin Lodge Hotel. We’ll wander through their grounds (YorkGate Plantation) and come out on York Gate again. We cut across a couple offields and descend to East Chevin Road\, which we’ll cross and walk downalong the pavement until we pick up a path into the Chevin Forest park.We’ll do a decent loop in here before emerging back at The Mistal in timefor lunch.

DESCRIPTION:For our September outing we have arranged a guided tour of the Piece Hall in Halifax at 11a.m. on Friday 25th September at a cost of £8.50 per person. The tour lasts approximately one hour\, after which there will be plenty of time to browse the Piece Hall’s range of independent shops and to grab some lunch at one of the cafés. We will set up WhatsApp groups nearer the time to arrange car sharing. \n\n\n\nDescribed as Yorkshire’s most important secular building\, the Grade I listed Piece Hall is an architectural and cultural phenomenon which is absolutely unique. It is the only remaining Georgian cloth hall in the world and the sole survivor of the great eighteenth century northern cloth halls\, a class of buildings which embodied the vital and dominant importance of the trade in hand woven textiles to the pre-industrial economy of the West Riding of Yorkshire\, from the Middle Ages through to the early nineteenth century.  .
